  • Is there such a thing as kindness in the workplace?

We hear so much about the pinheads, the petty and the poisonous instead.

    • The Pinheads – the ones who think you wouldn’t mind washing their coffee cups.
    • The Petty – “Hey! How come YOU got sprinkles on YOUR doughnut?”
    • The Poisonous – “Sorry I left your name off the email about the meeting with the president. By the way, he asked where you were.”

But the good news is, wherever there are humans, there is also kindness – and plenty of opportunity to practice it.

    Savvily yours,

    Kindness in the Workplace

Once I was standing by the elevator having a pity party because I just couldn’t see how I was ever going to fit in with these new colleagues.

Suddenly I felt a light tap on my shoulder. When I looked up, this colleague just smiled at me in a way that said, “Hang in there.” He’ll probably never know the impact of that kindness.

In our last issue, I asked if any of you had examples of kindness at your workplaces. Here’s what a couple of you said:

Emily – Last May, our house caught on fire and our family found ourselves in temporary housing for nearly six months. My co-workers flooded our family with offers of housing, babysitting and playdates. One co-worker even took us on a picnic and to a concert, just to give us a break from the stress.

Erin – Once while traveling, a woman in the office I was visiting brought me peaches and blueberries from home so I could have breakfast when I arrived from a very early morning flight. It was completely unexpected, not to mention unnecessary, but it made my day.

A smile, a picnic, some peaches – it doesn’t take that much to make someone else’s day or even pull them in off the emotional ledge.

Working in a virtual world? An email, an instant message or a well-timed phone call can do the same.

It costs nothing to be kind. Think about it.

    Blog This

Do you blog? Do you read them? Post to them?

The number of people answering “yes” is exploding by the day. Fortune 500 companies are starting to use them to put a human face on their corporations and get valuable insights and feedback from customers and consumers.

At my job, one of the things we do is help companies create blogs and teach their subject-matter experts how to write them. If you are contemplating creating a blog, here are three tips:

    1. Be prepared to post to your blog regularly. Post a few times a week if possible.
    2. Write like you talk. One of the biggest appeals of a blog is its conversational style.
    3. Invite comments. Engage your readers and pull them into the conversation by writing something that will invite them to respond.

If you want more information so you can be the genius who brought blogging to the big boys and girls at your company, email me at: janie.gabbett@marsteller.com. Or, give me a call at: 847-651-4821.

What blogs am I reading? I like The Biz Chicks on the Remarkable Woman Magazine Web site. Hey, wait a minute. I AM one of the Biz Chicks! Janie, Janie, Janie, what shameless self-promotion.

Remarkable Woman Magazine Editor Karla Williams and I are blogging weekly on the new Apprentice, Los Angeles. Take a look and post your own comments on the game, its leadership lessons, his hair or Ivanka’s impressive presence.

Then, when someone asks you, “Do you blog?” at least you can say, “I post.” And that’s a start.

    Yours in kindness,

    Janie
